Kevin Mackinnon talks about a new inspirational sports documentary called "Living is Winning"

Living is WinningDrew Johnston is either a glutton for punishment, or a man who simply won't let anything get in the way of his dreams.

In 2004, instead of finishing Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid and getting a Kona slot, the former pro cyclist found himself on the side of the road with a leg injury. Turns out that was the least of his worries.

A subsequent visit to the doctor left Johnston with news that was far worse than a simple DNF at an Ironman … he learned he had Leukemia. Luckily enough, the disease was caught early and, thanks to a drug called Gleevec, has since gone into remission. Two years later Johnston would qualify for the Ford Ironman World Championship at Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene. Needless to say, it’s not like that was easy.

Luke McKenzie and Belinda GrangerGranger and McKenzie take 10th anniversary Ironman Malaysia titles

Aussie, Aussie in Malaysia. Luke McKenzie ran away from Bryan Rhodes to claim his second Ironman title today, while Belinda Granger used a stellar bike ride to decimate her competition before the marathon even began as the two made it a great day for Australia here in Langkawi, Malaysia.

“I’m so ecstatic,” McKenzie said of his win. “I had the best race today. He (Rhodes) was just sitting that minute behind for the first 21 km. I kept wondering if he had it, if he was just waiting to reel me in the last half.”

Last year at Ironman Japan, McKenzie led from start to finish for his first Ironman win. Today he had to share the leading duties with Rhodes, a two-time winner here in Malaysia. In the end, though, McKenzie proved to be too strong on the run for the Kiwi, who had nothing but praise for his rival after the race. “It was a great duel,” Rhodes said at the finish line.

Granger winning in Malaysia 2008KUALA LUMPUR: The Ironman Malaysia Triathlon organizers are confident they can attract 1,000 participants for the race in Langkawi on Feb 28.

Race director A. Chandrakumanan said the event had attracted 718 people so far.

This, he said, was still encouraging because of the limited participation of European triathletes due to the winter season.

“Most of the participants who have confirmed their participation so far are from Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Australia and Malaysia,” he said yesterday.

He expects the number of local participation to increase significantly by the closing date on Feb 15.

Chandrakumanan said defending women’s champion Belinda Granger of Australia and 2007 men’s champion Luc Van Lierde of Holland were among 30 professional triathletes who have confirmed their participation.

Defending men’s champion Faris Al-Sultan of Germany is skipping the event due to injury.

The Langkawi Ironman features a grueling multi-disciplined race comprising 3.8km swim, 180.2km cycling and 42km run.

David Carfagnoby David Carfagno / Medical Director for Ironman Arizona

The IronMan is considered to be one of the most rigorous athletic events in existence. It is held in high regard for not only the amount of distance for which must be completed (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run), or the intense training for the 3 different disciplines, but also the fact that there is a time limit placed to finish the race.

To think that excelling and aiming to place first overall, age, bracket etc, would be the main focus. But for most competitors, it is to finish, and by 12:00 am, midnight. Nearly 17 hours after they have dove into the Tempe Town Lake.
